The section on affordances vs signifiers reminded me of how we did internal tool permissions at a company I worked at. Instead of hiding a button, we'd show the button and then when the user clicked on it we'd surface a "request permission" dialog. So both the affordance - i.e., the capability - and the signifier - i.e. the button - were visible to the user, even if the user didn't yet have the permission grant to do the functionality.
